Historic, beautiful town with intense tourist traffic especially during winter because of the modern ski center. It is built on the slopes of Helmos (altitude 750 m) over the ancient city Kynetha. On December 13, 1943, the Nazi’s Troops, in retaliation for a battle lost by the resistance groups , executed about 1,500 men over the age of 14 and burnt the city. It is located 77 km from Patras NA.

  • The picturesque railway station.
  • The Cathedral, built in the mid 18th century. Burnt by the Turks in 1827, rebuilt but destroyed again by the Nazi’s Troops in 1943. The clock tower on the left has stopped at 14:34 a.m. time of the holocaust of Kalavryta on 13 December 1943.
  • The Museum of the Holocaust in elementary school building. Here on the morning of December 13, 1943, the Nazi’s Troops gathered all the residents and ordered them to get a blanket and food for one day. Women and children were kept in school, while men over 14 years went to the nearby Kapi’s hill (now the Place of Sacrifice), where they were executed.
  • The Monument of the executed (Place of Sacrifice). Located 500 meters from the center of Kalavrita ( Kapi’s hill ). At the point a cross of eight meters is placed, while columns show the names of the families of the executed. Still, in catacombs are small hanging lamps equal in number to the number of the executed men.
  • The Municipal Gallery of Constantinos Fassos, operating since 1999 and hosts tables of the local painter Constantinos Fassos.
  • Paleologina’s Mansion (15th century).
  • The remains of the castle of Oria (or Kalovrat), built in 1208.
  • Monastery of Agia Lavra, 5 km south of the Kalavryta. According to tradition, was built in the 10th century, linked to the Greek Revolution of 1821. Has significant relics from those times and rich library.
  • The National Monument to the Heroes of the Revolution, on a hill near the monastery of Agia Lavra.
  • The monastery of Megalo Spilaio, BA 10 km of the town. The cave opened in nearly vertical rock face of 120 meters above Vouraikos River. The monastery built in 362 AD and is considered the oldest in Greece, but until now has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. In Panagia Megalospiliotissa’s Church, located in a cave, there is a wax image of the Virgin, painted by Evangelist Luke.
  • Cave of Lakes in the foothills of Chelmos mountain, 16.5 km N from Kalavrita (near the village Kastria). Impressive stalactites and stalagmites and 13 lakes spread out across three floors. Visiting the cave is done by boat. On the premises of a museum with finds from the cave, restaurant and tourism booth.
  • The Ano and Kato Lousoi (Soudena) about 11 km to the South, where relics are preserved temple of Artemis Lousiatidas (4th cent.) and impressive Petmezaion Tower (17th century) and Planitero village (25 km SE), in a great location.
  • The picturesque mountain villages of Ano and Kato Vlassia (25 km W), an area with abundant greenery and running water. A short distance from the Falls of Agioi Taxiarches , the Ancient Leontios and the Monastery of St. Nicholas.
  • The monastery of Makellaria (30 km W), dedicated to the Assumption.
  • The church of Panagia Plataniotissa, 30 km NW of Kalavrita the road to Aigio through without wings, a green area with abundant water. The church was built inside the hollow of a huge plane, derived from a combination of three plane trees, creating a unique monument.
  • The National Observatory telescope, named “Aristarchus” (in Chelmos Mountain).

Activities

 

  • Ski and snowboard, the ski resort of Chelmos at “Vathia Lacka” (15 km SE). The total of 12 tracks (total length 20 km) located at an altitude of 1650-2340 m, and the ski resort has 7 lifts (5 sliding and 2 air), ski school and chalets. Every Saturday, you can night ski track “Daphni” (www.kalavrita-ski.gr).
  • Hiking in the European part of the E4 Kalavrita to Kato Loussi - Planitero - Armpouna - St. Nicholas - Tourlada - Krinofyta. Also, walking downhill Vouraikos in May. The descent is along the lines and lasts from 4-7 hours (Information: Mountaineering Association Kalavrita)
  • Climbing in Chelmos where at “Diaselo Augo” will find refuge “Leontopoulos”. (Information: Mountaineering Association Kalavrita: 26920-26111). From here, organized various trips in mountainous areas.
  • Mountain bike route Ski Center - Souvardo - Lake Tsivlou.
  • 4X4 Excursion to Lake Tsivlou (length 20 km) with spectacular views
  • Caving in the mountains and Helmos Ziria.
